Dr. Madeline Harts is the foremost expert on the vocal pedagogy, art song, and singing methods of British-American singer, composer, and pedagogue Clara Kathleen Rogers (1844-1931). Dr. Harts was awarded the 2020 Presser Foundation Music Grant to conduct research at the Harvard University Houghton Archives and British Library, compiling and recording Rogers's art songs. Dr. Harts gives masterclasses, lectures, and performances of Roger-centric art song and pedagogy internationally. She has previously presented her findings at the Sam Houston State University Art Song Festival (2022), NATS Annual National Conference Chicago (2022), the State University of New York Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia, among others.
Clara Kathleen Rogers
January 14, 1844 - March 8, 1931
A British-American singer, composer, and pedagogue active during the early twentieth century. Daughter of the “Father of English Opera,” John Barnett, and cousin to German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer, Clara was a highly acclaimed artist of her time. After a successful operatic career in Europe, she immigrated to America and firmly embedded herself within the Boston arts community, sharing friendships with Amy Beach (1867-1944), Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1972), and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882). Clara composed
nearly 100 songs for voice and authored six treatises on the pedagogy of singing, most of which while she was a professor at the New England Conservatory of Music. Her music and contributions to singing are now being rediscovered today.
